Wilmar

Wilmar was founded in 1995, with social impact at the core of its operations. Over 5,000 farmers, their families and communities have benefitted from Wilmar since its founding. We partner with small scale farmer’s groups to provide highly quality flowers and fruits. To ensure consistent production of flowers and fruits, we provide the farmers with planting materials at subsidized rates and agronomic support through our team of agronomists.

To ensure consistent production of flowers and fruits, we provide the farmers with planting materials at subsidized rates and agronomic support through our team of agronomists.

In 2020, the company diversified into avocado farming and will continue using the out-grower model in avocado business thereby increasing the social impact footprint with an additional 2,000 smallholder farmers. We are fully certified with Global Gap and GRASP.

We are the first Small holder Model farm to acquire the Kenya Flower Council silver and Global Gap certification.

The KFC Silver certificate is based on environmental and socio-economic values which ensure certified producers foster safe, sustainable and responsible production of cut flowers and ornamentals. The KFC Silver Standard covers good agricultural practices, human resource management and workers welfare, Health & safety, environmental protection & conservation, and post-harvest management. GLOBAL G.A.P. is a trademark and a set of standards for good agricultural practices (G.A.P.) for safe, sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Airfreight capacity not enough to meet demand

Demand is there, but we cannot meet it because of the lack of airfreight capacity", says Ruth Muiruri, CEO of Wilmar Flowers, a Kenyan company that exports summer flowers that are grown by small and medium-sized growers. They were one of the first who started to exported large quantities of summer flowers to the Dutch auction.

Simon Muriuki, 47, who describes himself as a farmer by choice, not by chance, has been growing flowers for export for two years now, a business he is extremely happy with. He grows Arabicum and Ammi majus varieties of flowers on two acres of land in Sagana, Nyeri County.

Sang, 44, grows an assortment of summer flowers in Chesoton village, an agribusiness he has engaged in since 2009, and has no intentions of switching to any other crop. Seeds for propagating mobydick on an acre go for Sh3,500, but Sang says he spends Sh1,000 for the 0.25 acres he grows on.

Kenya’s small-scale growers embrace summer flowers

Samuel Machora, 55, is one of the farmers who have embraced small scale flower farming in Kenya’s Central Province. Mr Machora has been farming since he left secondary school 27 years ago. However, his flower ‘farm,’ which occupies only an eighth of an acre on his six-acre plot in Gatanga, 61 kilometres from Nairobi, turns out to be his major source of revenue, beating the four acres of tea and a vegetable and a fruit venture he tried before.
